Glenorchy day trip

Jeff, Judy and I set off after breakfast on a day trip to Glenorchy, a small town around 45 minutes drive from Queenstown. The scenery along the way was really beautiful with panoramic views across Lake Wakatipu, The Remarkables and Mount Creighton. Judy and Jeff were incredibly patient with my constant requests to pull over at lookouts so I could snap off photos. Thanks you two! We stopped at Mrs Woolly’s General Store for a cuppa and snack and found a treasure trove of gourmet foods, souvenirs, outdoor gear and high quality gifts. I almost made it out without buying anything but found I couldn’t leave without a packet of handmade cranberry and orange fudge, which coincidentally didn’t last the day…

Mount Creighton

It was then on to our destination of Lake Sylvan. We walked across the suspension bridge before starting our short hike of around 1.5 hours through emerald green rainforests and alongside the crystal clear waters of the lake.

It was then time to drive back to Queenstown for some R&R on the balcony before heading out to dinner at the Botswana Butchery. The restaurant had been recommended to me by three separate people, so expectations were high. Well, I can safely say those expectations were met. The decor was lovely, the service was excellent and the food was spectacular. My main meal was lamb loin with potato boulangere, caramelised onion, baby beets, black olive crumb and herb yoghurt. The three of us then shared the wildflower honey creme brulee with strawberries, elderflower gel, strawberry macaron, white chocolate and guava sorbet. My tip? Don’t share. Under no circumstances share anything.

After dinner we went for a walk around the town and ended up down at the waterfront to watch the sunset. We were lucky enough to find a table out the front of the Lodge Bar where we were able to people watch and listen to the excellent busker on the esplanade.

Your recommendations were fantastic Vern and I managed to get to Botswana Butchery, Fergburger, Arrowtown and Cardrona. I’ll be sure to do your favourite hikes on my next trip. Thanks again!
